A Little About Us

We are business partners who earned degrees in ornamental horticulture from CSU Fresno and in landscape architecture from U.C. Berkeley. After our formal training, we dedicated ourselves to learning all aspects of the landscape and gardening industry through hands-on work, association with other knowledgeable professionals and careful observation and evaluation, project after project. The hallmark of our business approach has been, and continues to be, an emphasis on quality and integrity. We p…

stewartia pseudocamellia: is it OK with full sun?

I have a stewartia ps. in a pot, ready to plant. My debate is whether to plant in front yard (part shade) where it may compete with and partially hide ugly diseased City-owned street trees. Or southern exposure back - to east side to hide a neighbour's unsightly yard and house. Anyone have experience with this small tree - slow growing.... so unlikely to hide anything fast!

The new outdoor kitchen

One thing I have learned, a 60+ year old guy has no business swinging 80lb. bags of cement around. We hand mixed and poured the footings for the cook-top and side benches. I ordered the counter tops pre cast - easy decision. Precast concrete saves me a grand or so, just on counter tops. I have a friend who has built an outdoor over, with enough encouragement I might get him to help me with the big job. Tips and suggestions are always appreciated. If I figure this thing out I will add some progre…

With Thanksgiving about a month away, some of you may be arriving at Backyardster looking for advice about grilling the ol' bird on the grill. Well, we've done the hard work for you and found a few great resources.

First off, we've added a couple videos that show how to grill a turkey. One uses a charcoal grill, the other a Holland grill. Check them out in our Videos a…

Outdoor Brick Ovens

Outdoor brick ovens are becoming quite popular with the advent of outdoor kitchens, on which Americans spend more than $50 million every year. You can bake pizza or bread, and even turkey (recipe) is great because the high moist heat does not dry out the roast. A nicely designed brick oven can add considerable character to your outdoor living space.

If you don't want to hire some…

Thinking about doing your yard? Lessons I've learned...

We started with a large dirt lot and now, months later, have a wonderful place to hang with the kids, grill fabulous meals, and relax. Here's a brain dump of some of the things we learned along the way when using a landscaping professional.

1. Start with your neighbors. We were in a fortunate situation in that we moved into a recently built neighborhood, so everyone had recently finished their yards. Talking with our neighbors, who both had completely different experiences, we were able…

Welcome to Backyardster!

My wife and I bought our first home last year. Knowing very little about landscaping, we spent a bunch of time researching design ideas, learning about which plants grow well in the area, and finding a landscaping contractor. It was definitely a learning experience!

Backyardster was created out of the need to have a friendly, social environment for exchanging useful advice, recommendations, and ideas. We've got a number of ways for you to interact with other members... a forum, blogs…
